Writing Topics Related to Investing and the Stock Market:
The following writing assignments are a great way to assess your student’s progress. The assignments can be done on an individual basis or in groups with 3-5 students each and should be shared orally in front of the class as part of the assessment. The writing topics are designed with each of the following types of writings in mind: Descriptive, Compare and Contrast, Persuasive, Sequential, and Problem/Solution.

Descriptive:
- Describe a financial planner
- Describe an investment broker
- Describe the trading floor of the NYSE
- Describe the process for a stock to be traded for either the NYSE or the NASDAQ
Compare and Contrast:
- NYSE vs. NASDAQ
- A successful broker vs. an unsuccessful broker.
- Investing in the single stocks vs. a mutual fund.
- Buying stock from a large cap company vs. buying from a small cap company.
- Why you would buy stock from one company compared to another.
Persuasive:
- Why one should or should not buy stock in a particular company.
- Why one should invest in the stock market.
- Why one should not invest and perhaps keep their money in a bank account.
- Persuade someone to sell stock of a particular company.
Sequential:
- Define the process an investor takes to research a company.
- Define the process you or your team took to buy stock of a particular company.
- What steps does a company have to take to become an IPO?
Problem/Solution:
Read a newspaper article about a company encountering problems. If it is a serious problem for the company, what steps should be taken to solve the problem?
